Gareth Ainsworth believes Sunday’s EFL Cup match against Brentford has the potential to be the toughest test the club has ever faced.

Wycombe will face the top seed in the first round, with Brentford being the losing Championship play-off finalists back in July.

It’ll be the first match between the two sides since January 2012, when Brentford defeated Wycombe 5-2 at Griffin Park.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s match, Ainsworth said: “It will be nothing less than a real tough test-the toughest test we’ve probably ever had.

“We’re the highest we’ve been for 133 years and they’re probably the top seed in this draw for the first round.

“In the Championship who finished the highest? It was Brentford, so we’ve got the top team in the draw.

“That suits me just fine and hopefully we can go there and give a good account of ourselves.

“Thomas Frank is a good friend, a really good manager and it’ll be a great introduction for Championship football.”

With the Bees having lost 2-1 to West London neighbours Fulham in the richest game in football, there is the possibility of a play-off ‘hangover’- but the gaffer does not think so:

“They won’t have a hangover if I know that club, and they’ll be chomping at the bit to get back to winning ways.

“They’ve had a few international call ups which go in our favour but I’ve got a new squad, six to eight new players and we’ll see what we can muster up.

“I’ve got a great core and a great coaching staff and if we lose it won’t be down to lack of preparation or effort or endeavour it’ll be because they’re a good side.

“I won’t give any secrets away but we’ll be ready and hopefully the boys will have the right script for how I want them to do things but obviously there’s another script trying to mess ours up.

“Thomas [Frank, Brentford manager] is a good manager and a great guy but we’re in a good place at Wycombe- good coaches and great momentum and we’re probably looking to upset a few people.”

The match will be the first competitive fixture at the new Brentford Community Stadium.

He continued: “We will be the first team to play in Brentford’s new stadium, and hopefully the first team to win at Brentford’s new stadium.”

The game kicks off at 12pm on Sunday, September 6 and is being shown live on Sky Sports Football.
