A FAMILY travelled for more than six hours from Birmingham to Purbeck on Saturday - only to find all the roads near Durdle Door were closed.

Due to car parks at the Lulworth Estate site reaching capacity yesterday, roads in the area were blocked off as part of Dorset Council's contingency plans.

Police were asked by the local authority to assist with the situation.

Yesterday afternoon, a spokesperson for Dorset Traffic Cops said: "A colleague just stopped a gent who travelled from Birmingham with his 4 children to see Durdle Door.

"They set off at 8am and at 2.30pm they finally reached the road closure at Lulworth only to be turned around after 6.5 hours in the car."

Footage shared on social media by Lulworth Estate showed cars queuing to get into the car parks at 8am yesterday morning.

The authorities are expecting it to be "very busy" again today and urging people not to come to the area if possible.
