“Everyone should be proud of our town” - yes indeed.

Bridport News June 11 was full of reasons - the community support helpline, the banner on Colmer’s Hill, new cycle paths, our green spaces, the work of school staff and pupils, the determined members of Stepping Out.

We are all proud of our key workers, especially our carers, and acknowledge the debt we owe.

But I am also proud of my friends and neighbours and the many offers of help they’ve made. I’m proud of the volunteers who have maintained the green spaces for our daily walks. I’m proud of the local shops and businesses who have kept going for us in spite of difficulties. And whatever the shortcomings of our government, our town council has done an amazing job of co-ordinating the huge efforts of community and charity workers and helped us all to cope.

I’m not complacent. I know that we have perhaps more than our share of hardship here, that there is grievous inequality as there is everywhere, and that too many struggle with disability and mental and physical illness.

It’s just that without all the work and goodwill of so many, things might be very much worse, and I think we must all be proud of that.
