A decision will be made next week on a new premises licence for a Bridport trading estate.

The Cove Café, at Seals Cove, an existing antiques centre on St Andrews Trading Estate, is asking for on and off sales of alcohol and for entertainment and late-night refreshments.

Its application wants to see alcohol sales between 11am and 11.30pm daily with an extra hour on New Year’s eve and all national bank holidays as well as entertainment between 8am until 11.30pm with the same additional hour for drink sales.

The business describes itself as a ‘family leisure complex’ in the application with a floor plan showing a diner, party room and a seated area overlooking a soft play area.

Five letters objecting to the proposals have been received from neighbours most concerned about noise and disturbance.

Said one, a shift worker in a letter to Dorset Council: “I am concerned that if this licence were granted it would be the first step towards the trading estate becoming a site for more entertainment venues, for which it is not appropriate.”

Another said that almost everyone going to and from the venue would use the same route, past homes. The letter writer said that this was accepted for the trading estate as it exists where work was mostly during office hours, but a late night business would mean disturbance, potentially up to midnight, or beyond.

“The application is for it to be open 7 nights a week as well as extensions for bank holidays etc. There would be no respite. Surely there are enough licensed premises in Bridport without another?”

The application will be decided at an online committee meeting on Wednesday July 15, starting at 10am and can be viewed via a You Tube link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4-CSERBEbs&feature=youtu.be

Councillors have a range of options open to them including accepting the application, rejecting it, or agreeing it with alterations.
