A DORSET carer support charity has created postcards to thank carers for the work that they do and to celebrate them during this year's Carers Week.

Carer Support Dorset supports carers of people over the age of 18 in Dorset and aims to create carer friendly communities where carers are recognised, valued and supported.

The charity has made three postcards as a way of thanking Dorset's unpaid carers for everything that they do for the local community.

The postcards coincide with this year's Carers Week, an annual campaign to raise awareness of the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

The theme of this year's campaign is making caring visible, and aims to highlight the new challenges carers are dealing with as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and to provide information and support to carers in need.

Emma Kirkup, communications officer at Carer Support Dorset, said: "We made these postcards in conjunction with The Arts Development Company and Dorset Council as a way to say thank you to Dorset’s unpaid carers for all that they do.

"Many carers are ‘hidden’ and don’t consider themselves to be a carer. This year’s Carers Week aims to highlight these carers. During Carers Week we are raising awareness of our unpaid carers and the fabulous work that they do, often behind closed doors. They can be mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, neighbours or friends.

"They look after someone with physical, mental or substance misuse problems and can come from a diverse range of backgrounds and communities. COVID-19 has been an incredibly hard time for many carers with increased isolation.

She added: "We’d like to let carers know that we are thinking of them and are there for them if they would like to discuss their caring role with the Carer Support Dorset team."
