Coastguards helped search for a missing 85-year-old.

While out on patrol on Saturday, West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team was approached by a concerned member of the public shortly before 2.30pm.

They were searching for their 85-year-old spouse who has Alzheimers and had been missing from home for 90 minutes.

Officers took details and notified the Solent Coastguard Operations Centre and police before asking the person to go home in case their spouse had returned.

In the meantime, West Bay coastguard officers carried out a vehicle search of the local area to see if the missing person could be located.

A message was received from Dorset Police saying that a member of the public had called reporting concern for someone fitting the description of the missing person.

The member of the public was following at a distance and the West Bay Officers were sent to help.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Thankfully, this was indeed our missing person and the casualty was escorted safely home by the officers.

"We wanted to thank the member of the public for reporting their concern so diligently, and for keeping the casualty in vision until help arrived.

"If you do find yourself in difficulty or see something that gives you cause for concern, do not hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
