The mental health service within Dorset Healthcare has created a mindful calendar to promote wellbeing during lockdown.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) has released the Mindful May calendar which includes a different daily activity to do in May to encourage participants to focus on themselves and take a break from the stress they may be feeling.

This is the first year that CAMHS has launched such a project but they are hopeful that it will be a success and will lead to further projects being made in the future.

Sarah Stockham, clinical lead for the mental health support team in schools in Weymouth and Portland, said: "We recognise that a lot of people are just sitting at home and are unsure how to look after their wellbeing because they are juggling childcare or work etc, so we thought if there was something that families could do together and the task doesn't feel too odious then it would be manageable.

"Our emotional health is so important at the moment. There is a lot of focus on physical health but people seem to forget that being stuck inside and unable to go out can impact your mental health too.

"The act of having something to do each day will make people feel better and it is based in mindfulness which is about being present in the here and now and stopping all of the other stuff from going on."

The calendar has a different activity each day, including nature spotting, having a bath and a technology detox.

Miss Stockham said: "We know that sitting on the internet and absorbing ourselves in the news is not good for us so deciding to put our phones away and play a board game for an hour would be helpful and allow us to focus on ourselves and not be distracted.

"We know that people are trying to do some mindfulness already but if we can give them a bit of structure then they are not having to decide what to do for themselves which takes some pressure off."

The calendar and more information on mental health and mindfulness is available at the CAMHS website.
