A SCHOOL’S technology department has stepped up to help frontline workers facing an equipment shortage.

In response to the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed by healthcare workers, a nation-wide problem, Beaminster School’s head of technology, Adrian Barton, and his team have been using their skills and the school’s facilities to help.

Along with his son Max and the rest of his department, Mr Barton has been making PPE visors.

So far, they've made and distributed more than 500 PPE visors.

A Rotary donation of £500 has helped support the cost of materials as they continue to make vital pieces of equipment.

Deliveries have been made to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, with protective masks for the emergency department, Bridport Community Hospital, The Hyde, St James, Weldmar, Broadwindsor House, Altogether Care, Casterbridge Manor, Steepleton Manor, Whitway House and Signature House.

Mr Barton said: “Like everyone else, I have been very concerned and upset about the need for adequate PPE in our hospitals and care homes.

“So when I heard about the initiative to actually make PPE visors I jumped at the opportunity as I knew it was something we could make in Design Technology.

“The rest of the department were extremely enthusiastic to produce the visors and we all feel very proud to be able to help an support our amazing NHS and care home staff in even a small way.”

A spokesman for the school added: “Beaminster School’s Technology department are continuing their great work supporting our fantastic NHS by making and supplying protective masks to add to protection in these challenging times.

“Production continues, with many thanks to the Rotary Club who have very kindly presented the school with a cheque for £500 to help support the cost of materials to make these vital pieces of equipment. Well done head of technology Mr Barton, his son Max and Mrs Walton.”
