I was appalled by the sight of a rather soulless concrete inverted seating area [previous to the coronavirus outbreak] which, for a prolonged period of time could cause medical problems for people that use it.
A small number of us were instrumental in securing the site for motorcyclists in 2000/2001. The hard landscape structure is not in keeping to the historical buildings surrounding the site, and resembles more like a helipad. However, maybe those who were allured into the idea could be compared with the coat of many colours!
During December 1925, George Brough who built the ‘Rolls Royce’ of motorcycles, organised a run, which also included his won Brough Superior SS Alpine Grand Sport.
A few Dorset enthusiasts were participating and braved the elements to ride approximately 200 miles on the London – Exeter trial. West Bay was one of the dropoff points.
In the early 1930s Lawrence of Arabia would fill up at Coyford Garage before visiting West Bay on his Brough for a tea stop.
I feel because of its historical connection West Bay and its other Dorset coastal connections projects should seriously rethink the seating design, i.e. replacing it with traditional bench seats facing towards the sea, but allowing riders plenty of room to park, together with a stone plinth with a bronze model of a Brough Superior on top, including lettering around the side commemorating this epic event.
