LYME Regis needs to be prouder of its achievements.

That’s the view of Karen Durham-Diggins of Plastic Free Lyme Regis, who is calling for signage to be updated to reflect this.

She attended the Lyme Regis Town Council meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the issue.

She said: “The town council has been instrumental in supporting both Plastic Free Lyme Regis and us achieving the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities award.”

She also noted how the town council declared a climate emergency last year.

She explained: “The town council deserves to be proud of supporting these actions.

“Currently these achievements aren’t visible unless someone walks into a shop or business that’s been individually awarded or supported the campaign, or they happened to know the URL for our website.

“Town signs at the perimeter of Lyme Regis need replacing because they’re tired and faded.

“Any town council email, website or social media communication could adopt the Plastic Free Lyme Regis logo and mention the Surfers Against Sewage award at virtually no cost.

“This would enhance the town’s reputation in an almost subliminal way.

“If a sign was produced for the railings at the clocktower and one near to The Cobb, explaining why Lyme Regis is an award-winning plastic free town and examples of this, so the new refill water taps. recycling rubbish, picking up litter, boomerang bags. This would be very easy and a cost-effective way of informing many people. Plastic Free Lyme Regis would be happy to create this.

“Our signs on entry to Lyme Regis need replacing because they’re tired and faded, one of them is not as faded as the other, because it’s under some trees on the Sidmouth Road.

“We suggest new signs to promote the town and it’s eco-friendly approach. The coat of arms is on many items, but this alone doesn’t represent Lyme Regis. The colours, typeface, style and images on signs around the town are varied. The council branding could be more consistent.

“The things we are recommending shouldn’t require anything other than adding things, so it’s cost effective.

She added: “Loads of people are talking about how good we are – The Guardian, BBC radio, even Dorset Council.

“You’ve done really well; you’ve helped us all. I just think you should be telling more people about it without too much effort.”

Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian Larcombe said: “We’re looking at it, in many respects this really would go the town management and I suggest John our clerk get it on the next town management committee agenda.

“Your presentation is remembered.”
