Plans for 170 homes on the Weymouth football stadium site have been rejected.

Area planning committee members voted against the details of the scheme and a financial and legal agreement.

Several councillors were unhappy that all affordable housing had disappeared from the project; were worried about having a single road in and out of the site and were not pleased with the design of blocks of flats which would have been built alongside Hampshire Road.

Officers had recommended that the proposed scheme and the legal agreement should be approval.

Councillors were told that the 2014 outline consent included a legal agreement that a replacement sports stadium should be built and ready for use before the housing scheme started.

The detailed application from Weymouth Community Sports LLP proposed 170 homes with a mix of flats and houses together with ponds, play areas and allotments and areas of green space.

Most of the properties, 69, are shown as three-bed houses with 39 two-bed, 32 one-bed apartments, 19 two-bed apartments and 11 four-bed houses.

Local councillor Jean Dunseith said that trying to get in and out of the site with just one entrance would be almost impossible when police station and golf course traffic was also taken into account.

Cllr Kate Wheller and Pete Barrow agreed with the concerns. “It really is an accident waiting to happen,” said Cllr Wheller.

Littlemoor councillor Louie O’Leary, a Weymouth FC supporter, said the club directors were puzzled by the application as they didn’t want to sell their site and had nowhere else to go. He too was against the single road access.

The club is reported to have an option agreement to sell to the developers, but the committee heard, had no obligation to do so.

Chickerell councillor John Worth said the site was isolated unless you had a car – with no bus routes and the nearest shop 15 minutes away.

Cllr Dunseith said that since outline consent was granted all the affordable housing had disappeared from the proposal and the developers were arguing that the only contribution they could afford was £200,000 for the new road junction.

“There is no planning application for a new sports stadium. It’s as if it has just disappeared into thin air…It’s most disrespectful,” she said.

Both Chickerell town and Weymouth Civic Society had recommended rejecting the housing scheme.
