It’s been a busy few days for firefighters across west Dorset.

Bridport and Lyme Regis were among several crews called out to a barn fire in Colyford, east Devon just before 10.30pm on Friday evening.

The barn containing straw and hay bales was well alight and multiple appliances attended using hose reel jets, main lines, foam and breathing apparatus wearers.

A number of animals had to be evacuated from the building and a man was treated for breathing in smoke as flames tore through the site. A number of calves were rescued from the barn and a vet was on site treating the animals as required.

The fire service described it as a 'busy and challenging night' for crews. The incident was scaled down overnight with a few personnel remaining on scene on Saturday morning supervising the barn which was being allowed to burn out.

Beaminster firefighters were called to Corscombe on Sunday morning at around 5.45am after a vehicle slid on black ice and got wedged between hedges. There were no injuries.

The second call out for the crew that day at 11.15am was a chimney fire over the border near Crewkerne. They managed to put out the fire by cutting away and removing smouldering embers before checking the chimney with a thermal imaging camera.

Later that day just after 3pm, the crew were called alongside Weymouth Fire Station’s water rescue team and Yeovil Fire Station’s white watch rescue team to help a driver stranded in floodwater in South Perrott.

Crews from Bridport were called to a large fire in Rousdon, east Devon, on Tuesday, which had 10 appliances respond at the height of the fire.

A fire had started in a garage workshop and spread to Rousdon Village Bakery, closing the A3052 between Lyme Regis and Colyford.

Smoke and flames were issuing from the building and one person inside managed to escape unharmed before fire crews arrived.
