Don't forget today, Thursday, between 10.30am and 12 noon you can visit the discovery centre, located in the former Methodist Chapel on the beach, for coffee and a chat. This is an ideal opportunity to meet those who volunteer at the centre, as well as finding out their plans for the forthcoming season. They await the results of another prestigious award in tourism so we ought to do all we can to encourage them in their work.

Whatever became of 'Derek' the dead dolphin that laid on the West Beach for far too many days last week before being removed? Was there a breakdown in communication with the councils involved? I suspect that any 'post mortem' examination will disclose the ingestion of plastic waste. This affects all manner of marine life including fish, dolphins, seals, birds and many other species. We must strive to prevent waste plastic entering the cycle, both as individuals and as a community. Sadly, all the organised beach cleans I have seen advertised happen on a Sunday morning which precludes my participation. On another day of the week you would see me there.

Next Friday evening, the George public house will hold a curry and quiz night starting at 8pm and costing £10 per person with a maximum of six people per team. The licensee, Karen, is looking for a chef to help a team of enthusiastic kitchen staff continue to provide the appealing and appetising menu. She can be contacted on 01308 423191.

Across the harbour at the Cornish Bakery, two members of staff are preparing for a head shave in May in aid of the 'Little Daffodils' charity. Little Daffodils helps to create memory boxes of children who have been stillborn or who die in the early hours of infancy. Parents are enabled to keep mementoes of their child. You can make a donation whenever the shop is open between now and May 8, when the head shave takes place.

The brilliant winter sunshine on Sunday afternoon brought people outside and the occasional unusual motor car too. I spotted a 740 HP Lamborghini V12 on the Esplanade and had quite a chat with it's owner. Apparently the car is capable of achieving 0 - 60mph in 2.6 seconds, but is rather costly in terms of fuel consumption with a mere nine miles per gallon. It has a top speed of about 230mph and is worth approaching £200K. So I'll not be buying one this year!
