Residents have been warned to take immediate action, with flooding expected in Weymouth tonight following a weather warning for high winds.

A yellow weather warning is predicting strong winds for the rest of the day, which could bring spray and large waves to coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities.

Flooding is expected on the Dorset coast at Preston Beach and residents have been warned to take immediate action in the area.

Large and powerful waves are expected at high tide, which is forecast for 9.30pm tonight. Flooding to roads and properties is possible at this time, however conditions may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide.

A spokesman for the Flood Information Service said: "We believe there is a possibility of flooding for The Sea Life Centre and the Preston Beach Road area of Lodmoor. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and roads."

The Met Office has said that the powerful gusts could cause some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

A road has been blocked both ways in Iwerne Minster due to a fallen tree.

The incident happened at Tower Hill.

There will also be the chance that some bus and train services are affected, with some journeys taking longer.

Weymouth's Dorset Senior Cup semi-final at Verwood Town has been postponed due to rain hurled down by Storm Brendan.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are likely and some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

A flood alert is also in place for Weymouth's rivers and streams, with a possibility of flooding for the River Wey to Radipole Lake, Preston Brook and River Jordan.

The FIS said: "Although the weather has been more settled recently there is rain forecast for the next 48 hours and we expect river levels to remain high for several days at least."

Further flood alerts are in place for Chesil Beach, the lower River Frome and River Piddle.

Rail services have also been affected by the weather, with National Rail stating: "Between 1pm and 9pm some South Western Railway services between London Waterloo and Weymouth may be amended to not run between Bournemouth and Weymouth, or to run as a separate train between Bournemouth and Weymouth."
