A man in a 'precarious' position at the top of a cliff has been brought to safety after concerns were raised for his welfare.

Police and coastguards were called to Burton Bradstock at 11.15am on Saturday to reports of concern for the welfare of a man on the cliffs near Freshwater.

Officers, assisted by the coastguard, attended and spoke to the man in an attempt to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

He was brought to safety at about 1.45pm. The man, aged 26, was arrested and has now been charged with breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He is due to appear at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court today.

Coastguards from West Bay and Lyme Regis were called to the incident and the beach was temporarily closed off.

According to Lyme Regis coastguards, the man was in a 'very precarious' position at the top of the cliff on the coast path.

He was safely escorted away from the cliff edge.

A coastguard spokesman said: "Thanks are extended to Bridport Golf Club for helping us get all our kit out to the coast path as well as allowing the play to be interrupted."
