FLOODING is expected on Dorset's coastline today with authorities warning that immediate action may required.

The environment agency said large and powerful waves are expected along the west coast of Dorset particularly at Chiswell.

Residents are advised to be alert and stay away from the coast, with spray overtopping forecast as a result of high tides and strong force seven winds in a westerly direction.

Conditions may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide at 9 o'clock this morning.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "We believe there is a possibility of flooding for Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, West Bay, Bothenhampton, Burton Freshwater, Burton Bradstock, Cogdean Beach, Chesil Beach, West Fleet, East Fleet and Chiswell.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Please be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and roads as large waves could be dangerous and avoid contact with flood water."
