It was a test of nerve for some and facing a fear for others when the team at Bridport Fire Station hosted a fire walk last week.

It was the first time they have hosted such an event, in which 25 people, including myself, took on the challenge of walking over burning embers.

The event was hosted in conjunction with Firewalk UK, with a representative giving us a briefing on how it works, the science behind it and the power of mind over matter while doing the walk.

Of the 25 signed up to do the fire walk, each one managed to complete it, with many going back to do it a second and third time.

The fire walk, which took place on Friday, December 6, was a fundraiser for The Fire Fighter's Charity, which supports past and present members of the fire service with mental and physical wellbeing. Participants were tasked with raising sponsorship.

Nicholas Courtice, station manager at Bridport, said: "We are hoping to raise as much money as possible for The Fire Fighters Charity.

"We would like to say thank you to everyone who attended, helping to make it a really fun and enjoyable event.

"We have had lots of comments from participants saying how much they enjoyed it, with one gentleman saying that it has really helped him with his confidence.

"We hope to do it next year and will be looking for more volunteers.

"We had 25 enter the event. This is the first time we have held a fire walk but we regularly hold other events such as our station open day and car washes and we are looking into holding an open air cinema in the future."
