There was thoughtful reporting on ‘Sea levels warning’ in the Bridport News (November 28), which followed many pages covering floods, tidal surge, coastal erosion, trapped by tide and aquatic animal deaths.

Our local tides currently reach about 4.3 metres at West Bay.

The anticipated one metre increase due to global warming will undoubtedly increase the existing flooding risk across seaside roads, fields, homes and businesses.

Coastal defence work at East and West Beach this spring reportedly cost 10 million pounds, but there are now questions about whether it will last this winter.

The Bridport News reports that Cllr Ray Bryan insists that our climate change executive advisory panel, where membership is not known, agendas are not published and findings not reported in detail to the public who pay for them, ‘will continue as it is’.

We pay for our elected representatives and those seeking our support need to be open and transparent about the future of our coastal community.

We must think carefully about our choices of representative and balance the future of our children and grandchildren in our decision making.

Our representatives should sign up to the Friends of the Earth’s Climate Action Pledge to take positive action to protect us and future generations from the coming effects of climate crisis such as those you report in your paper.
