Renowned artist Philip Sutton, who lives in West Bay, has released some limited edition merchandise items in an online shop.

The Royal Academist has had two very successful exhibitions at Bridport Arts Centre and the online shop was developed as a response to the demand for his work.

Within the shop there are cushions commissioned specifically with some of Philip’s colourful paintings, books, posters as well as vintage catalogues from previous exhibitions. The Christmas cards have been created from some of Philip’s archive work including images of robins and a reindeer.

Philip was born in Poole and, now in his 90s, lives at West Bay.

He studied and taught at the Slade School of Fine Art. Sutton has strong links with Peter Pears, Benjamin Britten and Sam Wanamaker. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Sutton turned his hand to design, creating a poster and banner for the 1979 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and the logo for Investors in Industry the following year.

This area extended to include ceramics - a wall of tiles for NMB Bank, Amsterdam - posters for London Transport, and postage stamps for Royal Mail. On 8 December 1988 he was elected as a Royal Academician.

A visitor to the recent exhibition at Bridport Arts Centre, said: “The colour is so far reaching, completely wonderful and intoxicating.”
