This week we’re taking a look back at the changing shops in Bridport, what they were and what they are now.
Frosts was a much-loved store by the community for many years, but closed in 2017, with The Original Factory Shop taking over the lease.
Hussey Baker’s had two shops in town, one in West Street and the other in South Street. Both bakeries were renamed Punch and Judy Bakery, but only the shop in West Street remains.
Best & Sons is now Lilliput Textile’s in West Street, but the ‘Best’ tile entrance can still be seen at the shop today, with Anthony Burton fine art specialist was situated at 77 East Street, however, there is no longer a shop here.
Austen Whetham and Guest solicitors, formerly in South Street, still operates as a law firm called Porter Dodson, and Pitcher and Son fishmongers, which was also on South Street, is now Waste Not Want Not.
The Bridport News office closed in East Street in 2015 but Peach Electrical is still operating at the same premises in South Street.
If you have any photos of the town’s former shops that you would like us to use, email them to news@bridportnews.co.uk or Bridport News, Fleet House, Hampshire Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 9XD.
