A former retained firefighter is coming to the end of an epic cycle from England to Spain in aid of charity.

Ross Longridge, who was a retained firefighter in Beaminster for almost 10 years, has taken on the challenge of a solo cycle from John O’Groats, the most northern part in Scotland, to the Rock of Gibraltar in southern Spain, passing through Tarifa, the most southerly point in Spain, and within sight of Africa.

He started off cycling the 916 miles from John O’Groats to Plymouth, before making his way to France and through Spain.

Ross turned 40 a few weeks ago and planned this 2,187-mile challenge so that he could raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, a charity close to his heart.

Ross said: “Weldmar Hospicecare provides the most caring support for people at the end of their lives, extending support to not only individuals but also the family surrounding them.

“This care at such a hard time is so important and really makes a difference.”

Ross lost his dad, Chris, around 12 years ago and Weldmar gave incredible support to him, his dad and his family.

He started in Scotland on September 2 and is due to finish on Sunday.
