Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is calling on people to enrol as on-call firefighters and hosting an event for those interested to find out more.

The team at Bridport Fire Station is inviting members of the public to a recruitment evening at their Sea Road base on Wednesday, October 9.

The event will allow those interested in becoming an on-call firefighter to try their hand at some of the activities and tasks asked of the role.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire station said: “During this event we will host multiple practical exercises based around the recruitment process you will follow prior to joining. It is also a perfect chance to meet the local crew and discuss what the job involves.

“There will be an opportunity to try on breathing apparatus, climb a ladder and so the national firefighter selection test for carrying equipment, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear.”

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service needs new on-call recruits to provide fire cover at locations across West Dorset.

Contracted hours can vary, but on-call personnel usually make themselves available for between 90 and 120 hours per week. Between them, each fire station team will provide cover for weekdays, evenings, nights and weekends.

In order to be on-call, you will need to be able to respond to the fire station in around five minutes once your pager goes off. This can be from home or work, and employers can benefit from a firefighter’s training – such as first aid, manual handling, a greater understanding of health & safety in the workplace, and enhanced team spirit.

The only restriction is age. You must be aged at least 17-and-a-half to apply.

If you are unable to attend this event, you can find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter at dwfire.org.uk/be-one-of-us

The recruitment evening takes place on Wednesday, October 9 from 5.30pm to 9pm.
