A charity providing transport to hospital, doctor and other appointments has celebrated 10 years, and is looking for more volunteers.

The Bridport Good Neighbours Scheme celebrated the milestone birthday at its annual cream tea event, where its volunteers met to mark the occasion and swap stories.

Three new volunteers, Kevin Harte, Joan Sinnot and Kathy Hince, ready and willing to give their time, were welcomed to the group.

The event was also an opportunity for the charity to express its thanks to the volunteers, as the scheme could not function without them.

The Bridport Good Neighbours Scheme provides transport for those who cannot use public transport or afford taxi fares for hospital appointments and who do not qualify for a hospital car.

The scheme is entirely funded by donations and its drivers clock up almost 20,000 miles between them each year. on average there are 50 trips per month, nearly half of them to Dorchester, with the rest to other hospitals such as Southampton, Bournemouth and Exeter.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “The number of referrals for transport is currently increasing and to ensure that this invaluable service can continue to support people in and around Bridport, we need more drivers to call on.”

The charity pays drivers for expenses and mileage and they don’t have to commit to a certain number of hours or days a week. In most cases, there is no additional premium to pay on car insurance.
