Trains on the Weymouth to London Waterloo line were facing major delays last night.
Trains were halted due to an incident near the railway line between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst.
A spokesman for Network Rail said last night: “Police are currently dealing with an incident between Brockenhurst and Bournemouth causing disruption between Southampton and Bournemouth/Poole.
”Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised.”
South Western Trains said that police have now dealt with the incident and lines were reopened but delays were expected all night.
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Pokesdown station at 7.25pm on September 18 following concerns for the welfare of a woman. She was then taken to a place of safety."
Anyone affected by this incident or any other can call the Samaritans free 24 hours a day on 116 123.
