A CLUB which teaches water safety will soon be moving to its winter base after a busy season.

Weymouth Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC), founded last year to teach water safety in a fun and exciting way, was set up by RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor and Weymouth Lifeboat crew member Alice Higgins.

It now has nearly 100 members ranging in age from ‘nippers’ (7-12yrs), ‘youth’ (13-15yrs), ‘seniors’ (16-29yrs) and ‘masters’ (30yrs+). Volunteer coaches concentrate on fitness and stamina both in the water and on land and teach rescue techniques using boards and tubes as well as first aid, with the aim to train the next generation of lifeguards. The club relies on donations and last year benefited from grants from Sport England and the National Lottery Awards for All scheme to purchase new equipment. Weymouth SLSC is based on Weymouth Beach from May-September and at Portland’s Osprey Leisure centre pool during the winter months.
