Emergency work to repair a gas leak is taking longer than expected, but is set to open this evening (Thursday).

Church Street in Lyme Regis was due to reopen yesterday after a gas leak was reported on Tuesday and the road was sealed off.

But SGN engineers remain on site after finding a second leak.

A spokesman for SGN said: "We’re continuing to carrying out emergency repairs to our gas network in Church Street.

"For everyone’s safety, Church Street remains closed between Anning Road and Long Entry. A signed diversion route is in place for motorists.

"Our engineers have repaired a leak on our gas main. We're now replacing a section of the main on which we've identified a second leak.

"All going well. We hope to complete repairs, reinstate the road surface – which takes time to safely dry and harden – and fully reopen the road by Friday morning."

A spokesperson for Lyme Regis Town Council said: "We have been informed by SGN that Church Street will be re-opened by 6pm today following emergency gas repairs."
