TWO prestigious speakers will talk about the climate emergency at the Dorford Centre at the end of this month.

The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, and Lindsey Fielder Cook, representative on climate change at the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva, have been booked to speak.

The title of the event is – Climate Emergency; the latest news, national and international.

It is being organised by Churches Together in Dorchester.

Val Potter of the Churches Together ecology group said: “It is going to be a great event because we have managed to book two superb speakers.

“It will be good to have Bishop Nicholas who is the Church of England’s environment spokesman in the House of Lords.

“We also will have Lindsey Fielder Cook from the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva bringing a global perspective on issues.

“Her close connections with the United Nations and what it’s doing to combat climate change will be well worth listening to.”

The Quaker United Nations Office works to emphasise the greater effects of climate change on the poorest people of the world.

Those attending will also be given the chance to quiz the speakers about the climate emergency.

Mrs Potter added: “It’s important with all the political stuff happening at the moment to keep people’s minds on the climate agenda.

“When we heard Lindsey would be in the area, we jumped at the opportunity to book her to speak.

Mrs Potter said: “I am the chairman of the Churches Together ecology group, we are trying to raise awareness in churches and look at issues and promote action.”

The event will be free to attend, but donations are welcomed.

The Dorford Centre is expected to seat around 200 people.

Mrs Potter added: “There’s always people who will turn up to hear Bishop Nicholas speak, so we’re expecting plenty of Anglicans, but there will be a general audience who can appreciate experts talking about the climate emergency.”

The talks will take place at the Dorford Centre on Monday, September 30 at 7pm.
