WEYMOUTH WILDCATS 12

READING RACERS 24

WEYMOUTH Wildcats suffered a disappointing 24-12 defeat at home to Reading Racers in the Midland & Southern Development League, with James Laker claiming three second-place finishes.

The result leaves Weymouth winless in the league this year heading into their final two fixtures next week.

The Wildcats got off to a losing start, losing out 4-2 in the first heat, with Laker accounting for the Wildcats’ two points, with Sam Peters fourth.

Jamie Evans, one of two guest riders for Weymouth alongside Darren Carr, flipped off the track in the second heat which meant Reading claimed a 5-1 victory, although Evans was unharmed, with Carr claiming the other point.

Heat three saw Laker duelling with William O’Keefe, with Peters fending off Eli Meadows. Laker took second followed by Peters in a 3-3 draw, with O’Keefe taking the top spot.

Carr was struggling with the track, as Reading won the fourth heat 5-1, with Evans claiming a point for the Wildcats.

The final heats saw Reading win 4-2 in the fifth, followed by a 3-3 draw in the last as the Wildcats fell to a wide defeat.

Weymouth Wildcats’ co-promoter Martin Peters told Echosport: “I’m a bit disappointed, it was quite a big margin really, I don’t think we were that bad, the previous day (the 22-14 defeat away to Birmingham Bulls) we did a lot better.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with the result, there is no one to blame, you can’t ever blame anyone. James Laker had a bit of an off day and he was a bit gutted by it but he still got three second-place finishes. I guess he is just setting himself high targets.

“The previous day he scored eight out of nine so we cannot rely on him all of the time, it is not possible that someone is going to score almost full points every time they go out to ride.”
