WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley bemoaned the ‘hammer blow’ of a late goal that saw his side lose 4-3 at home to Wealdstone in the Vanarama National League South.

Molesley praised his side for their ability to rally, which saw them come from 3-1 down to 3-3 and be dominating the contest at that point.

Molesley had kind words for Wealdstone as well, praising them as the toughest side his team have faced in the early stages of the season.

Molesley told Echosport: “They were probably the best side we have played this season and we had to be at our best.

“I think they brought the best out of us in the second half and I have to say the character and the way we rallied from 3-1 down was to be applauded but unfortunately we got the hammer blow at the end where again we switched off from our runner.

“So there are some really harsh lessons learned, unfortunately our points return over the weekend I don’t think quite reflects our work rate and how well we have done.”

Yemi Odubade, Abdulai Baggie and Brett Williams all got on the scoresheet for the Terras, with the latter a late replacement for Ben Thomson, who currently has a slight injury.

When asked if he felt that his side deserved to lose 4-3, Molesley replied: “No I don’t think so. I think you can clearly see why they are top of the table, what a good side. They are athletic, patient, good on the ball and got direct in behind as well so we had to be right on our toes.

“Unfortunately we got harshly punished but that is what you do when you play good teams, if you switch off or let them get a run on you then they are going to punish you and that was certainly the case.”

“We went 1-0 up but did not get the measure of them, we did not get quite as close to them as we would have liked. Then in the second half there was a slight tactical change and I felt we really got into the ascendency and that is why it is a real bitter blow to concede when I felt that we were on top.

“We rally though, like we always do, we come back. I think in the second half we were really strong.

“We came up just a little bit short (against Wealdstone) but against a very good Wealdstone side with some very good players.

“But I have to say we are missing two big players ourselves, also for Zubes (Stephane Zubar) two games in three days is probably a bit too much for him. So we were missing Stephane Zubar, Josh McQuoid and Ben Thomson, our two top goalscorers aren’t playing but we are still going toe to toe with some good sides while not fully armed.

“So there are so many positives start to life in the National League South.”

Molesley also discussed the absence of Thomson, who was named as starting, before he was replaced by Williams before kick off.

“He has had a slight hamstring issue where we were desperately trying to get him back fit for one of the games (over the weekend) and we have tried him in both warm ups and unfortunately we were hoping he was going to be able to play but he was still feeling it.”
