A weekend of open gardens has raised vital funds for a hospital's chemotherapy appeal.

Residents of Cattistock opened their gardens to the public in support of Dorset County Hospital's appeal, raising more than £1,000 with a flower show, along with organ recitals and bell ringing, being held in the church.

Tea and cake was served in Savill Hall and the event attracted more than 850 visitors.

The Cattistock Hunt Kennels also opened their doors and ran events throughout the day, while Manor Farm opened as part of the national Open Farm Sunday. The weekend ended with a grand draw held in the Fox and Hounds, where lucky residents and visitors won a variety of prizes, from gardening goodies to garden centre vouchers.

Simon Pearson, head of fundraising at Dorset County Hospital, said: "Cattistock Open Gardens raised a fantastic amount and we really appreciate all the hard work and support that went in to making the event so successful. These wonderful events not only raise funds, but also help to raise awareness about the work we do and the projects which make so much difference to our patients and the people who care for them."

The Chemotherapy Appeal is raising money to fund a major refurbishment of the hospital's chemotherapy unit. The project will focus on providing increased choice for patients in how they receive their treatment, and will completely upgrade the department in line with the high quality of radiotherapy and cancer outpatient facilities now available at Dorset County Hospital. Additional recovery rooms and treatment areas will be created to meet future demands, and space will be developed so family and friends can accompany patients while they are treated.

The Dorset County Hospital Charity was established in 1996 to enhance patient care at the hospital, working to provide support that is above and beyond the NHS budget. The charity is committed to building key income streams from donations, events and grants.
