Sports provision for primary schools in west Dorset has received a welcome boost.

The Bridport Runners and the Brit Valley Rotary Club, organisers of the annual Bridport Jurassic Coast Run, have given £1,000 to the Sir John Colfox Academy to provide a base for various primary school athletic events.

The money will be used to build a shed for the storage of kit and act as a base for all the on-field activities.

There are 14 primary schools in Bridport, Beaminster and the surrounding villages that participate in activities at Colfox throughout the year, a scheme run by the PE department at the academy, which can see upward of 250 pupils at one time.

The scheme also gives the opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to become sports ambassadors and help mentor the youngsters.

Irene Fairley, sports co-ordinator at Colfox, said that sports include multi-skills, cross country, hockey, football, cricket, athletics, tennis, netball, rounders and even a dance festival.

Bridport Runners and Brit Valley Rotary Club organise the Jurassic Coast Run every year, which took place on August 11. It takes place along the coast from West bay to Seatown and back on comprises a half marathon, 10k event and fell run.

Money raised by the event are donated to local good causes and in recent years contributions have been made to Bridport Youth Club, Mountjoy School and Dorset Mental Health Forum.

Bridport Runners and Brit Valley Rotary Club would like to wish all success to the Colfox ambassadors as well as the primary school pupils who will benefit from the new facility.
