The carnival returns to town next weekend, but there's more going on than just the popular procession.

Carnival festivities start tomorrow with a week of events, leading up to the main day on Saturday.

Here's what's on, when and where for the week-long celebration.

Monday

  • The carnival princess will be crowned by Bridport mayor, Cllr Barry Irvine, at the arts centre forcourt between 12.30pm and 1pm.

Tuesday

  • Enter the carnival quiz at The Ropemakers pub. It is teams of four and starts at 7.30pm.

Wednesday

  • Take the whole family to bingo at The Beehive Football Club. Eyes down at 7.30pm.

Friday

  • A darts and individual skittles competition will be taking place at The Beehive. Sign on for darts at 7.30pm, followed by skittles at 8pm.
  • The fun fair will back at West Street car park by the bus station.

Saturday - Carnival day

  • The Wessex Military Band will be performing in Bucky Doo Square from 10am.
  • A golf competition will be taking place at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club. For more information and enquiries, email admin@bridportgolfclub.co.uk
  • A number of crafty events will be happening around the town in the afternoon. From 4pm to 6pm, children can try puppet making at the Lyric Theatre in Barrack Street - which costs £5 per puppet with all materials provided and children must be accompanied by an adult - cupcake decorating at Moore Than Tea in West Street, chocolate decorating at Aleksandras Chocolate Cafe in East Street and get their face painted by Caroline from Smarty Pants at the Chapel in the Garden. Bridport Museum will also be offering rope making and knot tying from 3pm to 4pm.
  • The carnival procession will begin to line up on West Street from 5.30pm, moving off through the town and down South Street from 6.45pm. This will be followed by live music from MOJO in Bucky Doo Square and the fun fair in West Street car park.

Sunday

  • The popular torchlight procession from Bucky Doo Square to West Bay takes place.

Torches will be onsale at the square from 6pm until 8.45pm before the procession moves off at 9pm.

  • Mid Life Crisis will provide the musical entertainment by East Beach, where there will be a bonfire and fireworks display at around 10.30pm (weather permitting).

Road closures

On the Saturday, West Road from the entrance to Symondsbury Estate to West Allington will be closed from 4pm to 8pm, with West Street from West Allington being closeed from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

South Street Will be closed from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, with part of South Street - from its junction with West Street to Gundry Lane - being closed until 11.30pm.

The diversion will be via West Road, A35, Sea Road South and B3162 East Street.

On the Sunday for the torchlight parade, South Street will be closed from 8pm to 10.30pm, West Bay Road will be closed from 8.45pm to 10.30pm and Station Road in West Bay will be closed from 9pm to 10.30pm.

Misplaced Article Competition

Join in with the carnival fun by having a go at the misplaced article competition.

Participants are tasked with finding the odd object in each Bridport shop window listed on the entry form.

Fill it in and send it to A. G. Down, 66 South Street, Bridport, DT6 3NN by September 1.
