MORE drivers have been caught out on one of Dorset’s most notorious roads for speeding.

Traffic officers for the county’s police force used their laser guns along the A35 Puddletown bypass earlier this week and recorded speeds of 117mph, 102mph and 91mph.

The speed limit on the dual carriageway is 70mph.

Posting on the Dorset Traffic Cops Facebook page, an officer said the driver caught speeding at 117mph “admitted to being shocked at seeing a deer on the side of the road as we entered a layby upon stopping him”.

“Imagine the state of the car, the occupants and the deer if they had struck each other,” the officer said.

It was the “fastest speed in recent memory” the officer had recorded.

Speed checks are carried out on roads where crashes have happened or complaints have been raised, he said.

Other reasons given by drivers stopped for speeding on the bypass included: “I wanted to get home”, “I needed to let my dog out”, and “It’s only this little bit I was speeding in”.

All the motorists who were stopped on Monday were given tickets, and some could now face prosecution.

As reported recently, two of Dorset’s top five fastest drivers of 2018 were caught on the Puddletown bypass, speeding at 119mph and 120mph respectively.

The fastest motorist was also spotted on the A35 at Tolpuddle driving at a speed of 127mph.
