BERE REGIS 113ao (6pts) lost to WIMBORNE & COLEHILL 140ao (17pts) by 27 runs

BERE Regis produced a fine bowling attack but a disappointing batting performance to lose to Wimborne & Colehill by 27 runs in the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier League.

Wimborne’s Mark House was the highest run scorer of the day with 32 in a low scoring contest, while Martin Barker’s six-wicket haul for 31 runs ruined the lower order of Bere’s batting line up.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, which soon paid off the home side, when James Miller (2) was bowled by Matt King (1-23) with just eight runs on the board.

Colin Randall (25) and House then pushed the score along to 51-1 before the former was caught by Robert Murphy from a Sean Walbridge (3-17) delivery.

It was a consistent bowling performance, with Walbridge, King and Murphy each taking at least two wickets.

When Frank Turrell (13) was trapped lbw by Murphy (2-29) the wickets began to flow, with Wimborne now on 71-3.

The middle order then collapsed to leave the visitors on 100-6.

Lewis Freak (24) and Robert Hatchard (19) were able to push the visitors along to 126-6 before the former was trapped lbw by Murphy.

The rest of the order then followed leaving Bere with a target seemingly within reach.

However, Barker’s six-wicket haul ruined the mid to late order for Bere.

It seemed Bere had recovered from a poor start that left them 26-3, when they were able to push on to 75-3, but the loss of David Griffiths (21) sparked another collapse to 79-6.

Murphy (21) was the only other batsman to get above 20 runs, but he fell four runs after the loss of Griffiths.

From 79-6 Barker ripped through the rest of the order, leaving Bere 27 runs short.

Bere captain Rich Cole bemoaned the tough afternoon despite their bowling.

Cole told Echosport: “It was disappointing. We worked really hard to get them down to 140 all out and it was great bowling from our spinners and good spells of pace from Crispin Brown. It worked out that we could restrict them to 140 which we felt was below par, and then we just didn’t really apply ourselves with the bat.

“They had one bowler who took six wickets for 30-odd in about four overs. He was expensive but he was effective. That combined with some really good fielding from Wimborne meant we fell short.”

Bere host second-placed Poole Town on Saturday (1pm).
