Campaigners in Bridport took part in a national day of action to demand Proportional Representation on Saturday 6 July. With a stall by the bus stop on West Street, they gathered scores of signatures from local residents to petition West Dorset MP Sir Oliver Letwin.
The stall was part of a nationwide “Demand Democracy Day” organised by campaign group Make Votes Matter and took place in more than 90 locations from Bath to Sheffield.
A spokesperson said "The constituency of West Dorset has only ever been represented by Conservative and Unionist MPs. This leaves a huge number of voters demotivated and politically unrepresented. Democratic reform is just as urgent as - and is needed to fix - issues like the global climate crisis."
Campaigners also turned litter bins into First Past the Post ballot boxes in protest at the UK’s antiquated voting system. They are calling on politicians not to ignore the warning signs of our crumbling democracy and the effect it is having on people’s lives.
