The indifferent weather on Sunday meant a slow start to the Brit Valley Rotary's charity day in The Salt House where they served breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. One of their members, Ian Ibbotson, is also president of the Bridport Blind Club and was busy show casing their work. The club meets twice a month in the United Church hall. If you are interested then please get in touch with Ian on 0130 898484.

Observant readers will want to know what is going on in the outer harbour. Dredging is taking place and a huge amount of silt and debris has already been removed. It is hoped that the work will be completed by this coming weekend. In the meantime boat users are requested to contact the dredger on VHF channel 11 to ensure an uninterrupted passage in and out of the harbour. Harbourmaster's staff told me how they had sold an untold number of VHF radios to boat users as well as lifejackets. The chandlery store in the harbourmaster's office is certainly busy and so is the air station. Their principle objective is to ensure safety at sea.

The West Bay Discovery Centre has a leisurely walk planned for 10.40am this morning - Thursday - to explore the West Bay Railway branch line that was in use from 1884 to 1962. Just turn up.

The Discovery Centre has splendid new lettering on the front of the building. It certainly is clear what the building is used for today. A new exhibition about the history of shipbuilding at West Bay began on Tuesday. Apparently it is 140 years since the last ship was built, but 350 vessels were built in the shipyard during the previous 100 years. The exhibition runs until October 27.

On Wednesday, July 3 at 7.30pm in St. John's Church there will be concert performed by the West Dorset Community Orchestra and the Community Choir. A varied range of orchestral and vocals are on the programme. Admission is free with a retiring collection. Refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle. It promises to be a good evening.

Next Sunday there is no morning service at St. John's, but everyone is invited to join the congregation at St. Mary's at 10.30am. In the evening at 6pm. There will be service of wholeness and healing at St. John's. This is a quiet and reflective service to which everyone is welcome.
