The Weymouth lifeboat was launched to rescue a yacht from a notorious stretch of water after its engine stopped working.

The yacht ran into difficulty as it approached the Portland Race and needed to be rescued.

The yacht had left Brixham just before 6am on Tuesday, June 25 but the crew soon realised they were having engine problems.

They reported this to Solent Coastguard who kept listening and requested hourly updates from the yacht.

As the yacht got near to Portland Bill the adverse tides began to seriously affect the yacht and, fearing the boat may get caught in the Portland Race, asked the lifeboat to go and help the passengers.

The all-weather lifeboat was launched from Weymouth at about 5pm and towed the nine-metre yacht back to Weymouth at 8.10pm.
