COUNCILLORS objected to plans to build a roof terrace on a listed building in Weymouth.

The proposed addition of a rear terrace to Arcadia Guesthouse at 7 Waterloo Place raised objections at a town council planning meeting.

This is because the building is listed grade II*. According to Historic England, grade II* buildings make up only five per cent of all listed buildings in England and are of more than special interest.

The building is part of a long terrace of three-storey houses, dating back to 1835.

A large part of the significance of the buildings is the bow and sash windows contributing in particular to their special interest.

Historic England said it had "strong concerns regarding the application on heritage grounds.

"These relate to the lack of proportionate heritage impact assessment, and the harm that is caused to the more than special interest of this grade II* listed building.

"Further, we are concerned at the potential precedent that this proposal could create if granted permission."

Members of Weymouth Town Council's planning committee were consulted on the planning application on June 18 before it was sent to Dorset Council.

The council said it supported the comments made by Historic England and therefore objected "due to the impact on the historic nature of this listed building."
