Litter picking is moving inland in west Dorset from the coast to the countryside.

Litter Free Dorset’s first local inland litter pick - moving from West Bay to Bridport - will take place on Wednesday, June 26, when Asker Meadows will be given a thorough clean-up.

Meeting at the Waste Not Want Not shop in South Street, near Bucky Doo Square, volunteers will hunt for rubbish for an hour from 5.30pm, in the launch of a scheme where pickers can be borrowed free of charge from two town outlets every weekday during shopping hours.

Joe Hackett, co-ordinator of the litter pick, and who organises beach cleans locally, said: “There are now two two-minute litter free boards in the town - outside Waste Not Want Not and the tourist information centre. Each board comes with half a dozen pickers to grab rubbish.

“From now on, I will also have 20 pickers for adults, some for children too, and hope in this way that the town can be that little bit tidier and that people will help fight our over-use of plastics.

“Pickers can be borrowed from me at any time, including evenings and weekends, together with high-viz jackets and gloves.”
