A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy from Weymouth is celebrating after winning three gold medals at the National Dwarf Sports Games.

Lorcan Lennon-Patience, a pupil at Beechcroft St Paul's Primary School, took part in the annual competition, organised by the Dwarf Sports Association for people with restricted growth, winning two bronze medals and three gold medals.

This was Lorcan's fifth year of attending and the fourth time he has competed in the competition.

He took part in the 10-metre running race, throwing the tennis ball and Frisbee, new age curling, balance bike time trials, football, hockey and swimming.

Lorcan achieved bronze in both swimming and running and won the gold medal for tennis ball, Frisbee and football.

He was awarded his medals by swimmer Ellie Simmonds OBE, the Paralympic gold medalist.

Lorcan's mum, Siobhan, said: "Ellie is amazing. She is one of the patrons of the DSA and she is really dedicated because this is where she began. A lot of Paralympians start through the Dwarf Sports Games, it's such an amazing event for young people.

"The games were held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, where the Commonwealth Games are going to be held which made it a really big deal and a proper event.

"His favourite events are throwing the tennis ball and and riding the balance bike. The DSA even loaned us a balance bike and that helped Lorcan learn how to ride a pedal bike as a result of this fabulous scheme."

She added: "Many children with restricted growth can't access the same sporting events as their friends at school. This is fun but competitive, especially for the older children because there are Paralympic scouts at these events too.

"It's absolutely vital that he meets other children like him. He loves going to mainstream school in Weymouth but meeting other children at these events gives him a real boost.

"He has made a lot of friends that I hope he will know for life at these events."

Lorcan is now hoping to go to the World Dwarf Games in Germany in 2021, as he has been too young to compete at the previous ones.
