Remaining buildings on the former Qinetiq Bincleaves site in Weymouth will be demolished to make way for a multi-million pound retirement home complex.

A listed building application has been approved to demolish all the existing buildings on Bincleaves groyne with a variation agreed to a previous condition relating to the recording of the site.

The final demolitions will allow the developers, Fortuneswell Investments Ltd, to access what has been described as “very substantial ground slabs” underneath the existing buildings and then decide on what foundation works might be needed.

The site is on the waterfront to the south of  Newtons Road and covers an area of just under 2 hectares. It has been occupied by what has been described a 40 utilitarian and industrial-style buildings most of which have already been removed. They were previously used by the Ministry of Defence and then Qinetiq.

The site has permission for the building of a care village of 195 supported living apartments, a 60-bed care home, 34 respite hotel suites, medical support facilities, common rooms, leisure facilities and offices; a commercial restaurant, museum, cafe and new promenade together with improved coastal defence measures, gardens and underground parking. Approval was originally granted for the development in August 2016.
