A VILLAGE fun day is set to be out of this world as residents put together the finishing details.

Space is the theme for this year’s Broadwindsor Fun Day, which takes place in the village on Saturday, June 1.

Residents have been busy making scarecrows for the event, so expect astronauts, aliens and rockets, as it’s 50 years since Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon.

“We have a day full of fun in the Square and West Street, with stalls, sideshows, classic cars, teas, live entertainment, a disco run by Spike from the White Lion, a barbecue and a football tournament on the new multi-use games area next to the primary school,” said Margery Hookings, who is part of the organising team.

In the afternoon, there will be drum workshops with Organic Rhythm and children’s entertainment from Strawberry Jam. In the evening, local bands HiDDen and The Shadrack Street Band will take to the lorry stage provided for the occasion by local firm P H Hardwill Ltd. Entry is free.

West Street will be closed to traffic from 12noon until 12midnight, with diversions in place at Birdsmoorgate and Horn Ash.

“The aim of Broadwindsor Fun Day is for locals to get together for a good, affordable day out,” Mrs Hookings added. “Any money raised will be ploughed back into good causes in the village.

“This year, various aspects of the event have been taken on by a wider group of people in Broadwindsor. There will be something to appeal to everyone.

“We’ve been given some wonderful prizes from local businesses, including hampers, meals for two and vouchers. It’s incredible how generous people have been. We will be mentioning their names on social media and detail them on a board on the day.

“The support from the village and local businesses really has been tremendous.”

The week of fun begins with a big breakfast at Comrades Hall on Bank Holiday Monday (27/5) from 9am until 11am. The Fun Day on Saturday, June 1 starts with a parade of shields carried by village organisations at 2pm from Comrades Hall down into the square where the event will begin. It runs all day until 10pm.

The events culminate in a church service on Sunday at 11am when all village organisations are invited to celebrate life in Broadwindsor.
