One lucky bus passenger has had a bus named in her honour as she turned 101.

Marguerite Carter, from Bridport, catches the Service 7 and X51 three times a week to do her shopping.

With her upbeat character and chatty nature, the centenarian has certainly made a mark on the local bus drivers.

“She is just such a lovely lady,” First Wessex driver Wendy Murray said. “She is always impeccably dressed for a trip to town, complete with a hat and matching dress.

“She is always positive and smiling, which brightens up our day, and when I lower the ramp and give her a hand helping her off the bus, she jokes that I have rolled out the red carpet and wishes me safe travels.

“Having Mrs Carter on the bus, with her positive disposition, is a joy.”

When Wendy found out the beloved passenger’s 101st birthday was approaching, she felt compelled to do something to celebrate.

The bus company decided to pay Mrs Carter a special visit, armed with flowers, a birthday card, a lemon drizzle cake, and something slightly less ordinary.

As a lasting tribute to the treasured passenger, an X51 Jurassic Coaster bus had been emblazoned with Mrs Carter’s name in vinyl letters.

Mrs Carter asked if they did this often. Carol Sim, First Wessex’s operation manager, said: “No, you’re the first. It’s because we like having you as a passenger.”

Mrs Carter said: “It’s marvellous, it’s all so much - thank you very much.”

The seventh of 10 children, the Bridport resident shared her secret to old age. “Eat your greens,” she said. “Five a day. Every day.”
