A new campaign is encouraging businesses, residents and visitors to support the town’s independent shops.

Bridport is joining the first Totally Locally Fiver Fest, which encourages local independent businesses to create special £5 offers for their customers, to encourage people to support local.

Kim Squirrell, an organiser of the event, said: “The Fiver Fest event encourages people to think about how they spend their cash and has devised an easily achievable way to contribute an extra £4.6million to Bridport’s local economy.

“It doesn’t mean spending more, but simply deciding to spend £5 a week in a local business rather than a big supermarket or online.

“The bonus is that the distinctiveness of the town, which relies on independent organisations and businesses, is protected and supported.”

Organisers of Bridport’s Fiver Fest are inviting independent local business owners to join them, with 30 businesses participating so far.

“Shopkeepers, makers, service providers and community organisations are busy dreaming up their £5 offers which will be available from June 8 to 15.

“Taking part in the Fiver Fest won’t suit every business but the campaign has been proven to raise awareness and change shopping habits that will benefit everyone.

“If you can’t join in this time, please support us, share the message and keep in touch. There are lots of ways Totally locally campaigns can promote shopping local and the next Bridport event might just suit you.”

To join in Bridport’s Fiver Fest, pick up a form from Footeprints on East Street or email totallylocallybridport@gmail.com
