Historical re-enactors marched in west Dorset today as part of a series of events to remember the US troops stationed in the area before D-Day.

On Saturday, a permanent memorial to US Army personnel was unveiled at the gardens at Mountfield, Bridport, during the weekend of special commemorative events 75 years on from the Normandy landings.

The special ceremony included memories of the troops in Bridport and speeches before the memorial was unveiled by Angus Campbell, Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset.

The last post was sounded and the Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph read with a two minute silence held.

The event was a moving tribute to those stationed in the town before D-Day.

The 16th Infantry and other American personnel were based in the town during the Second World War.

And Sunday saw ‘First Division’ historical re-enactors take part in a parade at St Mary’s Church, Walditch. A service was led by Rev Pete Stone.
