Traders are celebrating a successful Easter after holidaymakers descended on west Dorset in their droves.

The busy bank holiday weekend was accompanied with great weather, which attracted visitors to Bridport’s market on Saturday.

The streets were bustling with visitors and residents, with stalls lining east, west and south streets, and musicians performed at Bucky Doo Square and throughout the town.

Steve Duke, who sells ice creams on Bucky Doo Square from his bike, enjoyed a successful Easter holiday.

He said: “I have been doing this for 10 or 11 years now. This is my first Saturday out this year and I am doing very well.

“It depends when Easter falls in the year and with the weather, but this has been an excellent Easter for me.”

Other traders also remarked that the amount of people visiting the town had really grown.

Andy Howell of Bayside Bakery, which sells a range of brownies at Bridport market, said: “We have done really well. We made extra for the bank holiday.

“The footfall. We’ve noticed has gone straight through the roof.”

Libby Rogers, of The Green Weigh – a mobile zero-waste shops that visits towns and communities across west Dorset and beyond – said they were able to help lots of tourists looking to lead a low-waste life and the van has become some-what of a tourist attraction.

She said: “In the Easter holidays we had visitors from all across the country. We’ve met people from Sussex and London and a lot of the time we find local residents will bring family who have come to visit. It has actually turned into quite a tourist attraction.

“We found that the most popular product for us over the holidays and what the tourists are really interested in buying our plastic free swaps.”

Stallholder Sally Townsend has just published her first book and was onhand to sign copies at her vintage stall.

"It was wonderful but then the weather helped enormously," said Sally. "There were hordes of people perusing the stalls and the atmosphere was very jolly."
