CHIDEOCK BYPASS: The proposed route of the £24 million Chideock and Morcombelake bypass is going to be almost wholeheartedly supported by Chideock parish councillors at the public enquiry.

They are going to press the Department of Transport to make just one change – to lower the bypass north of Chideock, something which is very unlikely to happen.

BEACH BUY: The National Trust is about to buy a section of the famous Chesil beach in west Dorset.

Cogden Beach at Burton Bradstock is being sold to the trust by Lloyds Bank after former owner Trevor Richards ran into financial problems.

SINGLE LANE SCHEME: Householders near the county primary school in Bridport are outraged as they got more than they bargained for from Dorset County Council.

Everyone was pleased when the scheme to install a footpath in Coneygar Road for schoolchildren, but they are now appalled to see works beginning to narrow a section of the road and make it a single lane to save two trees, which they say will cause accidents, grid lock and rat runs.

APRIL, 4 1969

NEW MAYOR: Lyme’s new mayor is to be Councillor Alec Richards. He was one of two councillors proposed for the high office at a special meeting of the council.

Nominated by the present first citizen, Councillor E. W. Price, Councillor Richards defeated Councillor Victor Homyer in a ballot by eight votes to six. There was one abstention.

LODERS TRUNK ROAD: Concern because of a proposal for a trunk road through Loders, Bradpole and the Marshood Vale, was expressed at the annual parish assembly at Loders.

Villagers were alarmed that any proposal for a trunk road through Loders valley and expressed the hope that any plans for such a road would be made available for discussion.

GARAGE CLOSURE: The decision to close down Bridport Motors Ltd in West Street has come as a sudden shock to employees and members of the public.

The work of removing plant, clearing out the works and dismantling the pumps took just two days and the huge garage premises were a silent shell of brick and timber.
