BRIDPORT Churches Together have launched an appeal for money and help for its youth worker project and new youth café.

The new café opened at the beginning of the month in the United Church in East Street so that youngsters can get together on Friday evenings staffed by church members.

Gabi Nonnenmann is the youth worker and it is her job to make contact with youngsters in the town.

The young project is funded by the church but it needs to get on a sound financial footing and Nelson Bainbridge is the man co-ordinating the appeal.

He said in this month's Bridport United Church magazine: "An appeal is being launched to put the project on a sound footing for the coming years.

"The project needs a budget of approximately £22,000 to cover costs, including the salary of the youth workers.

"Of this, £7,000 is provided by the churches and a considerable sum comes from donations. An appeal is now being launched to members of the churches to pledge a contribution of £10 per month."

Seventy people have already made the commitment but more are wanted and regular helpers are also wanted for the café.

"This can go ahead only if members of the churches are willing to staff the café, We need people who are willing to serve refreshments and talk with and listen to the young folk who come," said Mr Bainbridge.

"The youth worker project was set up by Churches Together in Bridport and is funded jointly by the churches, to reach out to young people in the town, with whom we sadly have little contact."
