THREE pupils at Bridport Primary School have won a science competition, earning them £500 for their school.

The Year Six children - Dan, Chloe and Jamie - took part in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) day at Atlas Electronik in Winfrith Newburgh, a maritime high-technology company.

The event was put on as part of British Science Week with children from schools across Dorset taking part.

Over the course of the day, the children undertook a number of challenges, including building a bridge from spaghetti and marshmallows, creating a torpedo which was self-propelled and making a life raft from lolly sticks and string.

Each of the challenges were judged and points were given for meeting certain criteria.

The pupils, Dan, Chloe and Jamie, were teamed with three pupils from Sunninghill in Dorchester and were crowned the winners, with each child receiving a K’Nex Education kit to create their own models and £500 for their school.

Adam Gough, deputy headteacher at Bridport Primary School, said: “We are very proud of Dan, Chloe and Jamie who took part and I am sure that their love of STEM will continue as they move to secondary school.

“We are looking forward to attending next year.”
