A police operation to catch an alleged shoplifter saw the force helicopter swoop on Bridport for a dramatic pursuit.

Shop staff attempted to detain a suspect who allegedly fled with stolen goods from a supermarket in the town yesterday morning.

The police helicopter was brought in track a suspect – police also said residents helped officers trying to find the person.

A spokesman for Bridport Police said: "Just after 11am yesterday we received a call from a supermarket in Bridport reporting a shoplifter who had run from staff who had attempted to apprehend him as he left the store with a bag of suspected stolen meat and fish.

"A car believed to be connected was located in nearby Pasture Way and stopped by police.

"A man was arrested on suspicion of theft."

It is alleged a second man ran from the car and was detained a short time later near to the junction of Crock Lane and the A35.

The spokesman added: "Thanks to our (police service) colleagues and members of the public for their help in locating the second male."

Police said a 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of theft and has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

A second man, aged 38, has been charged with two counts of shoplifting and possession of two lock-knives.
